where do dreams come from?

It is important to say that while I do not feel all dreams are from God. However, we can learn from each one. God is in charge of all, and there is none like Him in all the earth. There is no part of our lives that is outside of the influence of God.He is the perfect leader of all that is happening here on earth and in Heaven

Psalm 24:1

“1 The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas. And established it upon the waters.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DREAMS

Dreams directly from God: These dreams may or may not be symbolic, but the dream usually has a sense that this was from God and not a random dream.

Matthew 1:20

“But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

Dreams from the enemy: These are dreams which comes from the enemy to pull you away from God's plan for you. Paul says we would combat this by, "casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." (2 Cor. 5:10)

Psalm 91:5

“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day...”

Dreams that are vanity These are a culmination of the mind’s thoughts. It is important to remember that we have the ability to think. God does not control our thoughts, but provides avenues for us to see Him and meditate on Him (Psalm 1:2).

Ecclesiastes 5:7

“For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity.

But fear God.”

Dreams that you cause to be dreamed (False dreams):These come from the desire of your own heart, like a teen girl that dreams of marrying a rock star.

Jeremiah 14:14

“14 And the LORD said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart.”

Jeremiah 29:8

“8 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.”

A False Dream: is a dream which may come true, but it turns people away from following Jesus.

Deuteronomy 13

“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, 2 and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ 3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

The Soul: All prophecy/dreams must be according to Scriptures and not our own personal will (2 Peter 1:20 “knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation”). We must discern between what is from God and what is from our own soulish desires (Matthew 26:39, I Corinthians 14:14, Hebrews 4:12).

Different combinations of the above: I can have a dream where God is trying to speak to me, but just like during the day when I may add something to it from my thoughts, attitudes, or opinions, I can do the same at night while I am sleeping. For example, I have had plenty of dreams where God was trying to get me to say or do something, but envy or self-seeking (in my own life) caused me to respond with my own interest at hand. Confusion and all sorts of evil are the outcome (James 3:16). These dreams tell us where our hearts are and what our responses will be before God.

James 3:16

“For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.”

DREAM PATTERNS

Random dreams: These dreams come seemingly out of nowhere. Hold on to them until it is time.

Reoccurring dreams: Pay attention to these; God usually speaks or emphasizes a dream over and over again to get your attention.

Sequence dreams: many, if not all, dreams, which come in a night, build upon each other. (For example: Joseph interpreting the dreams for Pharaoh; the book of Zechariah.

Déjà vu dream: if you are standing around and “remember what has happened or is going to happen in the next moment then possibly God has spoken this to you in a dream before hand (seals instruction; Job 33:15-17)

DREAM LANGUAGES

Biblical language – when interpreting a symbol, we must first ask God if the bible interprets the symbol highlighted in the dream. Some of the dreams God gives you may parallel a scenario found in the Scripture (ex: If I dream of a snake in an apple tree, it is possible God is calling me to meditate on Genesis 2)

Personal language - These are words and symbols God uses to speak to you with in your own language. Only you and God can understand this language (ex: To you, a dog may speak of a childhood friend while I might be afraid of dogs).

Corporate language - God may speak in a language that everyone in the corporate setting might understand (ex. IHOP may speak of the “International House of Pancakes,” but to a group of intercessors from Kansas City, it means “International House of Prayer”)

There are times in my dreams when a friend may come to me with a name that is not their own. I will then search out what the name actually means.

Colors as a language - Different colors may carry significance in our dreams: we serve the God whose throne is surrounded by a rainbow. As you go on this journey, I would encourage you to keep the Word close to your heart so you can be turned to God. Others around you may have revelation about a particular color, but ask Holy Spirit what the Father was trying to tell you.

Cultural/foreign language - This is when God speaks in a language that is fitting for the culture or language of the individual having the dream.

Riddles or phrases - Sometimes a riddle or phrase is mentioned in a dream which is usually given to us to ponder (ex: The phrase “the David rain is coming” may speak of the future “reign of David as king” from Hosea 3:5)

Revelatory language - (Definite/ Spiritual) This is when God, an angel or other revelatory person gives you the interpretation of the disclosed event. Sometimes during a dream, one will gain revelation as to what a particular symbol or scenario may represent (ex: The angel Gabriel came and told Daniel what the dream meant)
